AN ESTIMATED 1,600 nursing students temporarily hanged their scrub suits and went off-duty to set the UST record for the biggest gathering to promote “wellness” last November 20 at the Plaza Mayor.

FRAYED nerves on the receiving end denied the UST Lady Spikers a fourth Shakey’s V-League crown, allowing the title-hungry San Sebastian College Lady Stags to snatch the tournament’s fifth season diadem via a 25-16, 21-25, 16-25, 21-25, Game 2 clincher last November 30 at the Arena in San Juan.

The best-of-three finals playbill was the third championship encounter between the two squads. UST won the first two meetings in the two conferences of the tournament’s fourth season.

THE UST Tracksters weathered eligibility problems in their off-season roster and finished second and third in the women’s and men’s open-age group divisions, respectively, of the 23rd Colgate-Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) weekly relay finals last November 22 and 23 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.  read more »

UST SUPERSTAR Jervy Cruz bannered the UAAP All-Star selection in a 91-81 trouncing of its NCAA counterparts during the 2008 Samsung Bantay Bata 163 UAAP-NCAA All-Star Showcase last November 16 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The Season 71 Mythical Team member and former UAAP Most Valuable Player (MVP) exploded with 15 points and six rebounds, to lead the all-star cast in a decisive 36-18 second-quarter breakaway which the Norman Black-mentored team sustained until the final buzzer. Cruz, who played his last UAAP season this year, was named the All-Star MVP.  read more »

THE CHURCH mourns the death of a priest who tried to build a stronghold of religious vocation in Asia.

Last Nov. 1, Fr. Domingo Moraleda of the Claretian Missionaries (CMF) passed away after a road mishap along the North Luzon Expressway. Reports from the Highway Patrol Group said that a bus on the other lane tried to overtake another vehicle by counter flow and hit the green Revo of Moraleda.  read more »

CATHOLIC youth organizations gathered at the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) headquarters in Intramuros last Nov. 22 to discuss a website development project that seeks to reach a vast number of young Filipinos and encourage more youth participation in Church-related activities.

Masbate Bishop Joel Baylon and CBCP spokesperson Msgr. Pedro Quitorio came up with this idea, citing the need for Catholic youth organizations to come together and take advantage of the technology.  read more »

HINDI nakukulong sa loob ng silid-aralan ang paggamit ng wikang Espanyol sa Unibersidad. Patunay dito ang pagkakatatag ng La Voz Estudiantil na nagsilbing daan upang magamit ng mga mag-aaral ang kanilang natutunan sa pag-aaral ng wikang Espanyol.

INSUFFICIENT funds have caused the Department of Health to be underhanded and nearly defenseless in the prevention of importing melamine-containing food products now ravaging China.

Although studies pointing to melamine’s adverse effects on humans have yet to be published, researches on the compound’s exposure to animals suggest negative effects such as renal ailments related to accumulation of bladder stones, which may lead to total kidney failure and in some cases, even death.  read more »

FOLLOWING UST Rector Fr. Rolando de la Rosa’s medium-term goals, University researchers are no longer focused solely on being published in academic journals and are instead seeking to become active disseminators of knowledge through a three-pronged research endeavor—solving society’s problems, giving livelihood to people, and cultivating a culture of entrepreneurship.

According to Dr. Fortunato Sevilla III, assistant to the Rector for research and development, this shift in research should facilitate a university-industry technology transfer.  read more »
