EVEN the elements could not stop her.
UST Trackster Liza Yambao brushed aside incessant rains and heavy winds to win the 29th Milo Marathon’s National Capital Region women’s division elimination leg last Aug. 7 which culminated at the Quirino Grandstand.
“It (inclement weather) did not really bother me,” the 23-year-old multi-titled runner said.
Yambao, the 2003 National champion, led throughout the race, registering 3:14:17. Veteran runners Liza Delfin and Mila Paje were second and third, clocking 3:19:29 and 3:25:52.
The usually confident Yambao said she felt the pressure of running against National Team mainstays.
“Some of the competitiors are from the National Team so I was a bit nervous,” said Yambao, who has recently dropped from the National Team training pool, after coaches asked her to stop studying for one semester to focus on her training for the Southeast Asian Games.
UST Tracksters Nina Ann Barcena and Bernardita Mag-aso ruled the women’s 5K run, checking in at 20:15 and 20:23.
In the men’s 10K event, Thomasian runner Ben Alejandrino finished third behind Philippine Team aspirant Alley Quisay and last year’s National Champion Allan Ballesteros.
