Tiger Jins bag awards in TKD Nationals

THE UST Tiger Jins snagged a gold, silver, and bronze in the 22nd National Taekwondo Championships last Aug. 6-7 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The UST Women’s Team A brought home the gold after defeating De La Salle University (La Salle) Team A, 5-0, in the finals. Composed of Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) sophomore Sarah Arellano, Education junior Esther Marie Singson, UST alumni and national team members Daleen Cordero, Josephine and Jasmine Strachan, the UST Women’s Team A also made mincemeat of Region Three (4-1) and Powerflex (5-0).

The UST Women’s Team C, composed of freshmen Maxine Lozada, Eireene Sediego, Xandra Fajardo, Kathy Bunyi, sophomore Grace Magtibay, and senior Kit de Leon, settled for bronze after surrendering to UST Women’s Team A, giving its Team A counterparts an outright ticket to the finals.

“Hindi na pinaglaban ni Coach Dindo (Simpao) ‘yung Women’s Teams A and C para hindi na sila mapagod. Tutal pareho naman silang from UST at para makasigurado na rin sa gold,” de Leon said.

Earlier, the Women’s Team C defeated University of the Philippines (UP) Team B (3-2) and La Salle Team B (5-0).

Meanwhile, the UST Men’s Team A settled for silver after losing to La Salle, 2-3, in the finals. Composed of Nursing freshman Gio de Guzman, IPEA sophomore student Billy Joel Corral, Science sophomore Kelvin Tabago, and national team members Tshomlee Go and Alex Briones, the UST Men’s Team A routed Region One (5-0), San Beda (4-1), and Far Eastern University (3-2) for a championship seed.
