Karatekas shine

UST ATHLETIC Karate Alliance (UST-AKA) president Juby Ruiz and Alma Cabasal brought home two medals each in the 1st Westin Philippine Plaza Hotel Martial Arts Tournament.

Cabasal topped the 16-17 girls kumite (sparring) category with Ruiz finishing second. Ruiz snatched another silver in the kata (forms) class while Cabasal brought home the bronze that time.

Stefanie Lopez from the School of the Holy Spirit (SHS) received the bronze and the gold medal in the kumite and kata events.

The UST team placed seventh overall against 14 other teams including representatives from fitness institutions and sponsored teams such as Perry Sevidal Studio, Technofit Fitness Center, Nobile Philippines and Unilever Kids. Among the collegiate teams that joined the competition are SHS, University of the Philippines, and Ateneo de Manila University.

Footworx-Sta. Lucia topped all teams with 25 medals while the team from ULTRA finished second with seven medals under their belts.

Meanwhile, Cabasal also won in the Best of the Best Sensei Cup last June 26. She won gold and silver medals in the kumite and kata events. Karla Tricia V. Magno
