How Gamilla came to power

EMBATTLED faculty union chief Dr. Gil Gamilla, who is facing calls to resign or be removed, himself took over the union leadership 14 years ago by unseating his predecessor, lawyer Eduardo Mariño.

Gamilla became union president in 1996 amid distrust over Mariño’s leadership, and the tacit approval of UST officials.

Before two decades of industrial peace, however, UST was rocked by a faculty strike in 1989 that led to the dismissal of union officials, including Mariño. Mariño’s group sued and was ordered reinstated by the courts. read more »

Guide to voting in the automated election

THERE’S no stopping automated counting for the national elections this year.

Allaying fears of a “back to manual” election, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has expressed confidence that the first nationwide fully automated elections would take place with no glitches on May 10.

But given the new technology, critics are skeptical whether automated counting would ensure clean and honest elections. Comelec appears to be convinced that everything is in place.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said voting in an automated election involves “quick and easy” steps that would only take five to seven minutes.  read more »
