THE FACULTY of Pharmacy dominated both the English and Filipino categories of the Impromptu Speech Contest sponsored by the Department of Languages last Nov. 26 and 27 at the Albertus Magnus Auditorium.
The Varsitarian’s acting science and technology editor, Stephen Roy Chua-Rojas, took the first place in the English category while Rosary Kristine Anido emerged as the top speaker in the Filipino category. read more »
LAST June 4 to 7, the Office for Academic Affairs held a seminar-workshop at the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex to renew the commitment of faculty members.
Dubbed “MTV (Mission-Teacher-Vision): Toward a Renewed Culture of Commitment”, the seminar-workshop aimed to make faculty members realize their value in the University, according to Crestita Tan, chair of the UST Task Force on Faculty Development.
Workshops and group dynamics, where faculty members gave ideas on how to make themselves more committed to the University, were the event’s highlights. read more »
LAST June 27, officers of UST’s various student organizations and student councils officially assumed their positions after being inducted by Dr. Evelyn Songco, assistant to the Rector for Academic Affairs, at the UST Chapel.
UST Campus Ministry director Fr. Dennis de la Cruz, O. P. reminded the officers of UST’s various student organizations and student councils to be wise and virtuous as Thomasian leaders. read more »
LAST June 29, the first batch of the Cisco Networking Academy Program’s (CNAP) participants graduated at the Engineering audio-visual room.
The 23 graduates are mostly composed of UST Electronics and Communications Engineering students and professors, UST alumni, non-academic personnel and professionals.
Launched in UST in September 2000, the CNAP teaches valuable internet technology skills, including networking, web site design, information technology (IT) essentials, cabling, Java, and Unix, an operating system equivalent to Microsoft’s Windows. read more »
TO EXPAND knowledge in information and computer systems, students of the Information and Computer Studies Department (ICS) of the College of Science established the Information and Computer Organization (ICOn), which was formally launched last July 4 at the Medicine Auditorium.
ICOn president Irwin Michael Hinayon said he is thankful to the Math Society (MathSoc), his other organization, for help in establish ICOn. Hinayon said they felt the need to establish a new organization because most of MathSoc’s activities are not related with computer studies. read more »
FOR her contributions and to the achieve nutrition improvement of Filipinos, College of Education professor Joan Sumpio was conferred the title “fellow” by the Philippine Association of Nutrition last July 1 at the Shangri-La Hotel, Mandaluyong City.
Sumpio was nominated by her fellow faculty members and the University alumni to be UST’s official representative to the nationwide event. read more »
THE STUDENTS Organizations Coordinating Council (SOCC) organized a leadership training seminar last June 28-30 at the Caraluega Retreat House in Batulao, Batangas to enhance the leadership skills of members of the different student organizations from all the colleges. read more »
INILUNSAD ng United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), isang sangay ng United Nations na tumutulong upang matiyak ang kaligtasan at pag-unlad ng mga kabataan sa buong mundo, ang “Ad Bata,” isang Value Ad making contest.
Bukas ang patimpalak sa lahat ng mga rehistradong Tomasino ng taong pampaaralan 2002-2003, maliban sa mga Tomasian Cable TV (Tomcat) volunteers, na siyang tagapamahala ng Unicef sa nasabing proyekto. read more »
TO ENCOURAGE the students to set up their own businesses for franchising locally and internationally, the Association of Marketing Educators (AME), in cooperation with the Junior Chamber of Business Administrators (JCBA), held the 2nd AME-NCR seminar last August 29 at the Medicine Cinematorium.
The seminar, “Doing the Business Right Through Effective Marketing Communication,” featured Bong Ungria, Shoemart Inc. core merchandise manager, and Joel Tuquib, Apo Cement Corp. technical manager and marketing professor of La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila. read more »
TO INCREASE the awareness among professional physical therapists and students of changing patients’ expectations, the Philippine Physical Therapists Association (PPTA) held its annual convention at the UST Medicine Auditorium last Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.
The seminar, with the theme “The Filipino Physical Therapist Facing the Challenges of being a Professional,” was in commemoration of the Fifth National Physical Therapy day last Sept. 8.
The convention was attended by a total of 400 students, professors, and professionals, compared to last year’s 120. read more »
