THE FACULTY of Engineering returned to the top of the university-wide quiz contest, ruling both the Team and Individual categories in the Quadricentennial edition of the prestigious Pautakan 2Q11 tournament.

A packed Medicine Auditorium saw the re-emergence last February 28 of the Engineering team that once dominated the competition. It regained the championship in dominating fashion with 260 points, leaving perennial title-holder Faculty of Arts and Letters (Artlets) and the College of Nursing to battle for spoils. read more »

In celebration of the University’s 400 years of unending pursuit for intellectual competence, the Varsitarian, the 83-year-old official student publication of the University, holds Pautakan 2Q11: the 34th Annual Intercollegiate Quiz Contest, on February 28, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Medicine Auditorium, St. Martin de Porres Building in UST campus.

Teams from different faculties and colleges will gather on the battleground of glory as they put their wit and fate to test to take home the revolving Pautakan trophy this Quadricentennial.

AFTER three fruitless years, the Alfredo M. Velayo-College of Accountancy finally made it to the top of the podium, toppling defending champion Faculty of Arts and Letters (Artlets) en route to bringing home their first Pautakan trophy.

“The word ‘euphoric’ sums it all up. We didn’t expect it, but we had our high hopes,” said team captain Fermin Yabut who led the seven-man team to the championship. Accountancy always fell short of bagging the championship since joining the quiz contest in 2007. They did manage to claim the individual’s plum last year in the form of Yabut. read more »

It’s that time of the year again when the best and the brightest in UST slug it out in the annual “Pautakan” contest.

The competition on February 24 gets even more interesting with the return of traditional heavyweights, the faculties of Medicine and Surgery. and Civil Law.

The question is whether they can return from a long hiatus, and pose a legitimate threat to the Faculty of Arts and Letters (Artlets), the defending champions and holder of the coveted revolving Pautakan trophy. THE INTELLECTUAL Holy Grail returns to their halls.

Pautakan hall-of-famer Faculty of Arts and Letters (Artlets) is back on its feet again after reclaiming the championship of the University quiz contest this year from a lowly seventh place finish last year.

Back in the top five from its two-year absence including a one-year break as hall-of-famers, Artlets overtook first runner-up Alfredo M. Velayo-College of Accountancy in the cerebral race with a 20-point lead last March 9 at the Medicine Auditorium.  read more »

WITH extensive reviews and training in History, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, and General Information, Pautakan teams may now hold the answer to every quiz question except for one: whose team will bag the trophy this year?

With “Hall of Famer” Faculty of Arts and Letters taking a leave this year, the campus is speculating which team earn the bragging rights as the University’s “alpha brains” come March 6.

THE TOP minds of the campus will once again pit wits when the Pautakan, the Varsitarian’s annual intercollegiate quiz contest, fires off on Mar. 6.

Now on its 30th year, the Pautakan is the longest battle of the brains in the country.

Contrary to popular belief, the National Quiz Bee is not the oldest quiz contest in the country. Three years its senior is the Pautakan, which was the brainchild of the 1977 staff of the Varsitarian.

But at that time, it was not known yet as Pautakan, but as the “Annual Intercollegiate Quiz Contest.”  read more »

COME February 22, Thomasian brains will be pitted against each other again in the ultimate intellectual battleground called Pautakan.

Already on its 26th year, Pautakan is considered the longest running inter-collegiate quiz contest in the country.
