Jan. 29, 3:19 p.m. - THE UST Tiger Spikers drubbed the University of the Philippines, 26-24, 25-18, 23-25, and 25-23, turning the tables in their second battle at the Arena in San Juan this morning.
Tiger Spiker John Depante stepped up with 15 points, while Mark Gil Alfafara and Christian Arbasto sizzled with 14 markers apiece.
“Nag-adjust ako ng pwesto para mag-match-up sa line-up ng UP. Mayroon kaming advantage sa ikot, at the same time, nag-step-up ang mga players ko,” coach Emil Lontoc said. “Naging kumpiyansa sila, pumangit ang receive at bumaba ang intensity ng laro. Kaya pinagpalit-palit ko ng pwesto at doon dumoble ang atake.”
In the fourth set, UP’s Luis Aguilan flaunted three consecutive quick attacks to give the lead to the Maroons, 9-14.
Depante and Rico bounced back with their decisive attacks and swift hits to snatch the lead, 23-21. Alfafara ignited a crosscourt kill to wrap up the match for UST, 25-23.
The Fighting Maroons outgunned the Tiger Spikers in the third set as they took advantage of UST’s erratic services, 13-16. Arbasto recovered with his powerful hits, but Aguilan was aggressive enough to nail a spike and grab hold of the frame, 23-25.
UP team captain Mico Lucindo sparkled with 17 points in a losing effort. Alexis U. Cerado
