UST preys on Lady Maroons

Jan. 25, 5:39 p.m. - THE UST Lady Spikers muzzled the University of the Philippines through a quick three-set match, 25-15, 25-15, and 25-15, at the second round of eliminations of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament earlier today.

Maruja Banaticla took the scoring cudgels for UST and yielded 17 points, while Maika Ortiz delivered 15 markers. UP’s Angeli Araneta, meanwhile, logged in 9 points.

Kailangan talaga namin ng mas maraming points kaya okay na three-sets lang kami, dahil na pe-predict ko na maraming may tie,” said coach Odjie Mamon.

The Lady Spikers banked on UP’s reception errors in the last frame, uncorking a 6-0 scoring binge sparked by rookie Jessey de Leon’s service aces to bring the tally to 13-7.

Araneta tried rescue the bleeding Maroons with her down-the-line attacks, 17-12, but they ended up useless after Banaticla’s crosscourt shot, 25-15.

The Lady Spikers are now tied with Far Eastern University at fourth place, with identical 6-4 win-loss cards. Anne Marie Carmela L. Dayauon
