Salinggawi places out of UAAP Cheerdance Top 3

September 17, 9:49 p.m. - A WELL-EXECUTED routine does not guarantee a spot in the cheerdance Top 3.

The Salinggawi Dance Troupe again dropped out of the Top 3 in the 2011 Samsung UAAP Cheerdance Competition at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum this afternoon.

Donning a gold Dominican cross on their black-yellow-white costume, Salinggawi slid to fourth place behind skillful Far Eastern University (FEU) Cheering Squad.

The University of the Philippines (UP) Pep Squad easily defended the cheerdance crown with their Madonna-inspired routine that left the audience in awe, while the De La Salle University Animo Squad unexpectedly won second place.

Asked about what went wrong with Salinggawi this year, chief choreographer Ryan Silva cited the team’s weakness in tumbling and gymnastics.

“I must admit, the team lacks mastery in terms of tumbling. This is because they aren’t really gymnasts when they joined [the dance troupe],” he said.

Echoing Silva, outgoing team captain Adams Bernabe said each Salinggawi member entered the team with “raw” talents.

“Everything we can do now is the product of our training here in [Salinggawi]. It is here where we get to discover our skills,” he said. “With a little more practice, I guess [the troupe] will be able to improve.”

Silva said the sequence of performances in the competition could have been also a factor.

“Perhaps the [order] of the teams’ performances was wrong. If we were able to perform before the top two schools (UP and FEU), the results could have been different,” he said.

Adamson University Pep Squad placed fifth, followed by the National University Pep Squad at sixth. The Ateneode Manila University Blue Babble Batallion and the University of the East Pep Squad placed seventh and eighth, respectively. Alexis Ailex C. Villamor Jr.

Wake UP

I think the stunts are all easy.. maybe they should practice more on that field. The performance last 2009 is much more exciting than the performance this year. Come on, You can still catch up with the emerging FEU cheerdancers. Viva Sto. thomas!

this is simply amazing i am

this is simply amazing i am short of words incredible.

ang masasabi ko

opinion ko lang: hindi maganda ang cheerdance natin this year.. mas okay pa yung dati.. ung egyptian thing blah blah....

fabulous four!

huwag kayong manggigil! natural lang, 400 years old na tayo, 4th place naman! bigyan naman ng chance yung ibang magsirko-sirko para magka-trophy. swapan naman natin kung puro tayo na lang. matuwa tayo at wala ni isang nabukulan sa SDT. talagang ganyan ang buhay, you can't have everything. eh sa buong mundo, me nangibabaw ba sa Human Cross? Guinness na yan, di pa ba kayo masaya? di pa ba tayo magpapasalamat, ang linaw-linaw, unending grace yon? beat that!

nobody loses...

Give them a break...it's not always a winning moment for us thomasians...we are not the center of the universe...we have to understand that while we might be doing our best in these competitions, other schools are doing the same thing...besides, there are just those that are way beyond our control...so instead of whining and complaining and feeling bad because the '400th year-old birthday celebrant' hasn't been atop everyone else...let's just be thankful that, hey, after all has been said and done, we're still a proud school...

>>>

if UP wins CDC next year and UST places 2nd runner up or below... mas mataas na ang ranking ng UP dahil sa medal tally

The SDT already diminished

The SDT already diminished its wow factor through the years. There is a salient point with the required skills of each member. They should at least practice more of their gymnastics. It is already given for a Pep Squad to have mastery in tumbling. Creativity is there, more angst pa siguro to make it wilder. Weakness are needed to be strengthened so as to prioritize it for the next season. Props and Costumes have no bearing in the new criteria btw.

DANCE MORE

I think the reason UST SDT is losing its 'charm' is because they're starting to take for granted what really got them noticed. which was their undeniable intricate dance moves! notice how every year since 2008, ust's performance slowly lessens their dance choreography. 2011's routine for me, the dance is completely gone!! i mean if there was dance, it was just a simple wave of the hands and the predictable piroutte. come on please wake up!! you are so caught up in the critics that say you need more stunts and tumbles! you already improved in that category a lot! but please don't lose your magic which was the DANCE! back when UST was having their 5-peat moment, UP, FEU, and other squads already perform high caliber stunts and yet we overpower them because of the dance! i mean the choreography where SDT do footworks was brilliant!

Uh-huh

TRUE.. although they will have a problem with the level of difficulty criterion.. but you do have a point.. and may i suggest that they should incorporate more "gimmicks" because obviously, that is the other team's strongest point

The Article

Is it me or is it just that the article is poorly written?

article

the article is very concise and straightforward. i do not see anything wrong with how it was written. maybe its just you. haha

It's time to embrace change

Thomasian doctor here. I agree with the other posts here. The university should now form a separate group solely dedicated to cheerdancing/cheerleading. In my opinion, the SDT shouldn't have a monopoly over everything. I admire the SDT but I really have to ask this, are they the only one qualified to represent us in "every" competition? We have to remember that we are a 40,000 strong university. We should give chance to others who really just want to be "plain" cheerleaders.

FEU Gymnast Team

"FEU recruited gymnasts from the Philippine team. These students did not enter FEU to study, they were recruited to compete for cheerdance" sorry but where did you get this information? one member of the team did not participate for this year CDC because she was sent to Korea for exchange program to partnered Universities there. They're are all studying in FEU. FYI

Over acting

Its funny to read "OA" comments from the wannabe Thomasians. For God's sake, we dont need a Pep Squad just to regain the title. What SDT should do is to improve on their dancing skills. Forming a Pep Squad doesn't equate a CDC crown. They should work on their weakness. That is enough. "Salinggawi Dance Troupe" is just a name. It is also funny to read comments about UST's academics. The university is not stupid to just focus on cheering. duh??? Please refrain from "over acting" comments.

Yeah. You're correct. More

Yeah. You're correct. More focus lang kailangan. The technique is there, maging agresibo lang sa pagkuha ng bagong members.

chill

chill dude. now look who's overacting :P

...

I'm sorry, but blaming it on the order of the performance was really a lame excuse. If they really did great last Sunday, kahit sila pa yung pinakahuling nagperform they'll land on the top three. Being a cheerdance fan myself and coming from another school, I think Salinggawi's performance this year wasn't even half as great sa past performances nila. Malinis, yes, but it lacked the angas factor. The routine showed how grateful they are to be a part of the 400-year existence of excellence ng UST but it lacked the audience appeal. Pero kahit ganun, I still am looking forward for SDT's next performances. :)

i agree

i agree. blaming it on the order of performance is very lame.

SDT should consider retiring in UAAP CDC

SDT should consider retiring in the UAAP and hand the university's representation in the CDC to a legitimate pep squad. This will help SDT to reinforce its image as a cultural group that focuses on folk dancing, ballet, and jazz. It is sad that the group has been boxed as cheerleaders and has therefore contravened its etymological phrase "salin ng mga dating gawi at lahi" (transfer of customs and traditions). Sadly, they are no longer the SDT of yesteryears which often got invitations to perform in CCP and international arts festival. Ironically, just last year, the UP Pep Squad was invited in Florence, Italy to perform a folk dance for the Philippine Arts festival. What does this say? Heck, during the 1st UAAP StreetDANCE Competition, our Salinggawi didn't even manage a placement in the top 3 and was ranked 5th.

Dedicated pep squad for ust

Yeah, i agree. UST should create a dedicated PEP squad. SDT is A dance troupe, NOT a pep squad. I realle hope magawan ng ust na paraan itong bagay na to.

not a big deal

for me this is not a big deal. what the school should focus more is on the quality of education it provides. we are bragging about the university's 400 years of existence yet it is only ranked as the 4th best university in the PHL. mind you, mapua ranked higher in engineering than ust and FEU-East Asia ranked higher in IT than ust. yes we are doing good in health sciences but we are lagging behind in high tech and mathematical courses. in a few years, i think UA&P, Saint Louis University-Baguio, University of San Carlos Cebu and MSU IIT will catch up. UST, watch out. this is becoming off topic but i am just trying to say that winning the cdc does not really add up to the worth of a university in terms of international recognition and ranking. produce more scientists, competent engineers, teachers, lawyers, business men, etc. NOT DANCERS. reduce freshmen admission and improve student selection, motivate professors to earn PhDs, improve facilities, limit class size to 20-25, and 400 more things to improve. cdc should be last on the list.

Business

Easier said than done. This is still a business at the end of the day. Limiting the class size to 20-25 while improving facilities is like saying spend more and earn less. Revenue Vs. Expenses, it's as basic as that.

yeah

yeah, so let's just all be contented with the system. maybe after 200 years they will realize what they need to do. as an alumnus, i am just tired of hearing insults from my co-workers in a US based IT company (majority are UP alumni) that Thomasians are mass produced. oh this is about cdc! sorry about that, i missed the point of the article. my suggestion is (1) to convert some physics labs to dance studios (2) and some speech labs (if they exist) to mini-gyms so sdt will have stronger lifters. (3) require students to watch the cdc competition even if they miss their classes so they'll get flat 1.0 in PE. and lastly, (4) scholarship funds for bright students should be allocated to the dancers/gymnasts instead.

UST PEP SQUAD

i guess ust should start to create a pep squad to replace salinggawi para hindi na nagagamit na excuse na 'dance troupe' sila kaya limited lang ang nagagawa nila sa cdc

Long way to go

I was not able to watch the live telecast last Saturday, so I was shocked when I got home and read posts in FB and Twitter that UST, the once 8-time champs, didn't even land at least the top 3 spot. What happened people?!?! Where's the passion? Wala na, parang nawalan na ng gana. Parang boxing lang yan eh, you watch competitor's games, you study their moves, their tactics. And I do not grasp ow could they have thought we could have won the trophy with THAT. Cmon, people. WAKE UP!!! Gumising tayo sa katotohanan na kinakain tayo ng UP. International standards are applied. And UP had indeed applied that on their moves. Even FEU is noticing. SEE!!! I say, you clearly watch the yearly US cheerdance competition, parang AWA nyo na. They showcase their mastery in tumbling, how flawlessly they execute difficult stunts and pyramids. AND they move fast, very very fast. Look for gymnasts, not only dancers. If UP will win next year, patas na ranknatin. WALA na and i say, WALA NA yung pinagyayabang na 8 time champions. Magiging 'ONCE' 8-time champion na lang tayo. We have to be very aggressive. Aren't we the Growling Tigers, right?? VIVA STO TOMAS!!

FEU recruited gymnasts from

FEU recruited gymnasts from the Philippine team. These students did not enter FEU to study, they were recruited to compete for cheerdance. FEU has training, alright, but armed with gymnasts who had acquired skills in years. Philippine government trained these girls but where are they now? They're in FEU competing for FEU. UP also has excellent recruitment program for cheerdance. Sadly, UST doesn't include gymnastics or cheerleading in its recruitment program. So don't blame Salinggawi. Blame IPEA.

Right. The SDT should remain

Right. The SDT should remain what it is: a dance troupe (doing cultural and modern dance numbers). Set up a dedicated cheering squad.

cdc

cmula ng nahulugan tau ng pyramid nung 2007.. yung mga sumunod na performances eh puro play safe na.. nd na talaga cya exciting.. un lang.. sobra ata taung na trauma.

I guess they need to recruit

I guess they need to recruit more experienced members next time. Developing their talents only by the time they joined the troupe just isn't enough anymore.

I love UST part 2

o kaya naman get an assistant Coach... DLSU hired someone from UPH, baka naman UST can hire someone na magaling sa tumbling or stunts, para ma train ng husto ang SDT sa ganyang skills

I Love UST

I think its time to create a dedicated PEP squad. If yung reason ni Coach Silva is lack of mastery sa tumbling, kung may dedicated team for cheerdance, mas magkakaroon ng focus ang UST sa mga kinakailangan na stunts.

panalo, matalo...tomasian pa rin!

we used to set the pace...they followed...maybe got even better. our time will come again...maybe sooner than expected. there are lots of space to improve on. what we need is to focus and learn. that what a thomasian is. batch 97 witness of the 1st 3 cheardance championships cheered for the 4-peat growling tigers
