THE UST Spikers suffered twin losses after bowing to Adamson University in the UAAP beach volleyball tournament at the University of the East-Caloocan sand courts today.
Errors plagued the tandem of Tiger Spikers Jayson Ramos and Mark Gil Alfafara as they fell against Hendrix Competente and Gilbert Longavela of Adamson. The España-based duo committed 10 errors in the first set, which ended at 16-21, and nine errors in the second set, 18-21.
Lady Spikers Maruja Banaticla and Judy Caballejo surrendered to Season 73 sand court queens Pau Soriano and Shiela Pineda of the Lady Falcons, 15-21, 19-21.
The loss dropped them to second the spot with two wins and a loss. They won against the De La Salle University, 21-5, 21-13, and National University, 21-12, 21-16 last week.
“They lost their confidence, I didn’t even see their real performance in our trainings,” said head coach Emil Lontoc. “But we will definitely fight back.”
In the second set, Alfafara’s quick attack tied the scores at 13-13, but his unforced mistake and Ramos’ long error enabled Adamson to take the lead, 15-17.
Adamson’s Longavela scored a kill that pierced Ramos’ defense, followed by another unforced error by Ramos that led to a 17-19. A quick attack by Competente punctuated the match, 18-21.
The Spikers are now in second place with a 2-1 win-loss card. They won earlier against the UP Fighting Maroons, 19-21, 21-18, 17-15, and UE Red Warriors, 21-17, 21-19 last August 27 and 28.
“We’re just too eager to have a point,” said Ramos. “We missed so many points due to poor attacks and blocks.” A. U. Cerado
